Last.fm to be a pay-to-use service soon.
by Hellreject on Jul.11, 2009, under Music, PC

This might not be news to some of you, but to others it might be quite the piece of bad news.
Last.fm will start charging you money for streaming music from their website. The reason, supposedly, is that it’s just too darn expensive to run such a service without having a steady income from the users.
Any user living outside of the United States, the United Kingdom or Germany will have to pay a monthly fee of €3 to be able to stream music. Shocker. According to their blog post, any user will be given 30 songs for free before they will have to start paying for the service.
Other functions like scrobbling, playlists, reccomendations, artist biographies, events and videos is going to stay free to use however, which is great. And to be honest, it’s the only thing I’m using Last.fm for, so to me this change isn’t so bad. Others out there might not be as happy though.
